Create an AI Character That Stands Out: The Beginner’s Guide

Ready to create your dream AI companion? Whether you’ve been chatting with characters on Floze for a while or you’re brand new to the app, there’s something magical about bringing your own character to life.

Maybe you’re picturing a brooding CEO with secrets, a cheerful time traveler with wild stories, or that charming vampire who’s been living in your head rent-free. Whatever character is calling to you, Floze’s character creation tool makes it surprisingly easy to turn those fantasies into reality.

This guide walks you through every step of the process, and gives you helpful tips along the way to make your character absolutely unforgettable. Let’s get started!

🌟 Step 1: Start Creating!

On the homepage, click on “Create” on the upper right corner, then click on “Create Character” at the bottom of the screen. Here, you’ll define your character’s essential details:

  • Language: Choose the main language your character speaks. Floze currently supports English, Traditional Chinese, and Japanese.
  • Name: Up to 30 characters, make it catchy or meaningful.
  • Gender: Pick Male, Female, or tap “+ Add” for non-binary identities.
  • Height, Age, and Birthday: These little details help shape your character’s vibe and realism.

🧠 Step 2: Define Their Identity & Personality

This is where your character starts to get juicy.

Identity & Personality
  • Choose up to 5 identities, like CEO, Professor, Vampire, Childhood Sweetheart, or Time Traveler.
  • Pick up to 10 personality traits, like Gentle, Mysterious, Tsundere, Romantic, or Dual-Natured.

If your desired trait is not on the list, simply tap the “+ Add” button to add your own! Try to mix opposites, like “Cold” and “Warm” or “Suspicious” and “Thoughtful” to build tension and intrigue!

💖 Step 3: Interests, Likes & Dislikes

Time to give your character depth.

  • Interests (up to 5): Reading, Dancing, Photography, Wine Tasting, Cosplay, you name it.
  • Likes & Dislikes (up to 5 each): Add flavor with preferences like “Flirting,” “Rainy Days,” “Horror Movies,” or “Being Ignored.”

Tip: The difference between Interests and Likes/Dislikes is simple: Interests are general hobbies (like “cooking”), whereas Likes/Dislikes let you be more specific. For example, “making homemade soup” or “baking cookies.”

🌍 Step 4: Time, Space & Relationship

Set the stage for your chats:

Time, Space & Relationship
  • Time & Space: Will your story take place in the Contemporary world, the Middle Ages, or Year 2350? Tap the “+ Add” button to add your own.
  • Status with user: Do you and your character already know each other or are you strangers meeting for the first time? This will affect how your conversation starts and how the character interacts with you.
  • Visibility: Make your character Public or keep it Unlisted for private chatting.

🗣️ Step 5: Add Conversation Samples

You can write up to 3 conversation samples that shape how your character talks.

Conversation Samples
  • Write dialogue snippets between the character and user.
  • Think of it like writing a movie script. These samples help define your character’s tone and quirks!

🧬 Step 6: Full Background and Optional Status

This is your chance to build lore:

  • Full Background: Up to 3000 characters. Include backstory, trauma, dreams, profession, origin story… anything that shapes who they are. Be as specific as you can, the more detailed the description, the more well-rounded the character will be.
  • Status Bar (Optional): Want to add a little extra fun to your Floze chats? You can create a custom status bar that appears at the start or end of your character’s messages. Be creative, add coins, heartbeat, mood, location… anything that makes your experience more immersive and personal!

Tip: Use Floze’s “AI Generate” button if you’re stuck! It’ll help you get started with a draft background based on the identities and personality traits you’ve selected.

📰 Final Step: Public Profile

This section includes:

  • Tags (up to 20): Help users find your character. E.g., #Vampire, #Romantic, #TimeTraveler
  • Introduction: This text appears on the character’s public page. It doesn’t affect the character’s personality, just lets users know what to expect.
  • First Message: This is the opening line users will see when they begin chatting with your character. Think of it as the hook that sets the tone, personality, and emotional vibe right away. First impressions matter: try setting the scene with a vivid description. Use asterisks from beginning to end to indicate actions or atmosphere.
    Example:
*It’s midnight. The stage lights have just dimmed, and the air still buzzes with the ringing echo of guitars. The heat and noise of the crowd are fading, leaving only a few dim bulbs swaying gently in the bar. He stands tall and lean, silver-white hair glowing under the hazy lights. His metal earrings catch the faint glimmer, swaying gently by his ears.
That wild performance left him drenched in sweat—droplets trail down his sharp collarbones, soaking into his worn leather jacket and ripped jeans. He heads to the bar without hesitation, grabs a cold beer, and takes a long swig. On his left wrist, a tattoo catches the eye: a slender silver-white snake coils around it, radiating a dangerous rock-and-roll allure that draws you in…*
“You here for the music too? If you wanna talk to me, you’d better have some attitude. Don’t bore me.”

💬 Tips for Writing a Strong First Message

  • Use a descriptive scene to instantly immerse the reader (e.g. “It’s four in the afternoon and the winter sun is streaming through the blinds…”)
  • Show their attitude or mood: flirty, shy, grumpy, cold, mysterious
  • Include a quote or question that sparks interaction
  • Make it personal. Imagine your character turning to the user and saying, “I’ve been waiting for you. What took you so long?”
  • You can write up to 1000 characters, so feel free to set a little scene or drop a juicy question. And if you’re stuck? Just tap the AI Generate button for inspiration.

✅ Before You Click “Next”: Check Ownership Confirmation

You’re almost done! Before you click Next, make sure to check the box confirming that: “The character’s content and images do not infringe copyrights or other rights.”

This is important! Floze respects creators, artists, and intellectual property rights.

Once you’ve filled out the First Message and confirmed your ownership, hit the Next button, and congratulations! 🎉
Your character is ready to meet the world (or just you and your close friends, if unlisted).

🧠 15 Expert Tips for Creating a Well-Rounded AI Character

Here are 15 extra tips to help you go beyond the basics and create a truly multidimensional personality on Floze:

  1. Start with a contradiction
Give your character an internal conflict, like being confident in public but insecure in private.
  2. Choose identities that spark tension
“Professor + Vampire” or “Boss + Childhood Sweetheart” opens space for dynamic conversations.
  3. Balance personality traits
Mix warmth with mystery, or romance with suspicion. It adds depth and makes your character more human.
  4. Pick interests that reflect values
A character who loves gardening might be nurturing, while one into extreme sports could be a thrill-seeker.
  5. Give them a unique voice
Let their first message and conversation samples reflect distinct vocabulary, tone, or rhythm.
  6. Add a few weaknesses
Perfection is boring. Maybe they’re terrible with directions or get hangry easily.
  7. Write a cinematic background
Think like a screenwriter. Give your character a formative moment, a regret, or a secret.
  8. Use “likes” to reveal softness
Even a tough assassin might secretly love puppies or K-dramas, no?
  9. Use “hates” to hint at trauma
If they hate “Being Ignored” or “Rainy Days,” explore why. These can lead to emotional story arcs.
  10. Consider their relationship with the user
“Already know each other” can be used for ex-lovers, childhood friends, or long-lost partners.
  11. Match time period to backstory
A Middle Ages healer will sound and act differently from a 2350s space pilot.
  12. Add emotional tags like #Lonely or #Protective
These connect with readers searching for specific vibes.
  13. Design how they grow
Who could they become through conversations? That arc is what keeps users coming back.
  14. Let AI help you brainstorm
Use Floze’s “AI Generate” to riff on ideas. It’s a great starting point for shaping backstories or introductions.
  15. Test your character in chat
Create a few versions and chat with them yourself. You’ll quickly learn what feels flat or alive.
